Discover Hi Bombay

Walking into Hi Bombay on Pleasant Street feels like stepping into a warm, busy kitchen rather than a formal dining room. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long walk through downtown Portland, and the experience has stayed consistent in a way that regulars truly appreciate. Located at 1 Pleasant St, Portland, ME 04101, United States, this Indian restaurant has quietly built a loyal following through honest cooking, generous portions, and flavors that don’t shy away from spice or complexity.

The menu is where the personality really shows. Instead of overwhelming you with dozens of unfamiliar items, it strikes a balance between approachable classics and dishes that invite curiosity. I still remember the first time I ordered chicken tikka masala here, expecting something predictable. What arrived was richer and more layered than most versions I’d had, with a sauce that leaned on slow-simmered tomatoes and toasted spices rather than sugar. According to food science research published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, blooming spices in oil releases fat-soluble flavor compounds, which explains why the aromas hit the table before the plate even lands.

One of the cooks once explained to me how they prepare their curries in small batches throughout the day instead of relying on a single base. That extra effort shows. The lamb vindaloo has a depth that comes from marinating the meat overnight, a method widely recommended by chefs trained in regional Indian cooking. The naan, baked fresh and brushed lightly with butter, has that soft chew you only get from proper dough fermentation, a technique supported by culinary institutes like the Culinary Institute of America for improving texture and flavor.

Vegetarian diners aren’t an afterthought here. Dishes like chana masala and palak paneer are treated with the same care as meat-based plates. During one visit with a friend who follows a plant-based diet, we compared notes and realized her meal was just as satisfying and filling as mine. Nutrition data from Harvard Health Publishing highlights that legumes and leafy greens, both staples on this menu, provide sustained energy and essential micronutrients, which might explain why meals here feel hearty without being heavy.

Reviews from locals often mention consistency, and that’s something I can personally vouch for. Even on busy nights, the food arrives hot and properly seasoned. The staff clearly understands the menu and is comfortable explaining spice levels or suggesting combinations. When I once asked for something similar to what I’d ordered before but a bit milder, the server immediately recommended a dish that matched my preferences perfectly. That kind of attention builds trust over time.

Portland has no shortage of dining options, yet this spot holds its ground by staying focused. It doesn’t chase trends or dilute flavors to appeal to everyone. Instead, it offers what many diners describe as authentic comfort food, a phrase that comes up often in conversations and online comments alike. While no restaurant is perfect, occasional waits during peak hours are a small trade-off for food that’s clearly cooked with care.

If you’re exploring restaurants near the Old Port or searching for a dependable Indian diner where the menu feels thoughtfully curated, this place earns its reputation through daily execution rather than hype. Every visit reinforces why it remains a steady favorite among both first-timers and long-term regulars.

  • Their food is amazing. I had the chicken tikka masala & lamb vindaloo both at level 8 spicy and it was perfect. Both dishes came with rice. We also ordered the garlic naan which was super good and perfect for dipping with the curries. The service was also friendly.

  • I had Lamb Rogan Josh here. It comes with rice and I also ordered garlic naan. Omg this dish is amazing. So flavorful and tasty. Firstly, I thought I couldn't finish both rice and naan. In the end, I could eat everything. Especially the naan is so good. So fluffy. I highly recommend to order garlic naan. The wait time is short and my order got to the table with a few minutes. The only thing is this restaurant is not a wheelchair accessible as you have to go up a small stairs to get into the restaurant.

  • Tucked away from the bustle, Hi Bombay is one of Portland’s best-kept secrets for Indian food. No gimmicks, no over-the-top frills—just quality, authentic flavors that hit all the right notes. We went classic with garlic naan, mutter paneer, and malai kofta, and every bite delivered comfort and richness. The naan came warm and pillowy with just the right garlicky punch, the mutter paneer was fresh and perfectly spiced, and the malai kofta… creamy, fragrant, and the kind of dish you don’t want to share. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled into a local secret—quiet, unfussy, and all about the food. For anyone craving soulful Indian cooking in Portland, Hi Bombay is the answer.

  • We are new to Portland and tried Hi Bombay this evening for dinner. The cuisine was simply wonderful so full of delicious flavors and spices! The Nan bread with Potatoes was fabulous with our curry chicken and lamb. Excellent customer service. Our server was professional, sweet and friendly. The portions are generous and reasonably priced for Portland. We left very happy with our dinner choice and this will be one of our new go to restaurants!!

  • Tasty and reasonably priced Indian fare. Flavors are fresh tasting. Service was good and helpful. We did experience a very cold appetizer, was hot on the outside and cold in the middle which shows it may have been frozen. They promptly made a new order that was quite good. Naan was very good and complimented the meals nicely and as re strongly suggested. Chutneys are served with all entrees and can really enhance the flavors of the dish. Definitely a solid choice for Indian food.

  • Great food and such wonderful service! What a nice spot to eat and warm up on a cold winter day. I only got a level 5 (out of 10) spice on my saag paneer, and it was not very spicy at all. I'd get a 7 or 8 next time. But the flavors were amazing! The garlic naan was some of the best I've had.

  • This is one of the BEST restaurants in Portland, period. My girlfriend and I eat here routinely (dine-in and take-out); the staff are always kind and warm, as is the atmosphere in the restaurant itself. And, of course, the food. Highly recommend the Punjabi naan, mango lassi, shahi paneer, chicken vindaloo, chicken tikka masala… the list goes on and on. Best enjoyed with a Rupee!
